Waist size

Waist size is an indicator of health risk associated with an excess of abdominal fat. Abdominal adiposity is associated to health problems like type-2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.


The waist should be measured at the narrowest part of the torso, halfway between the lower ribs (below the lowest rib) and the iliac crest (top part of the pelvic bone). Stand with your feet spread apart about 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in.). The person who is measuring you should be beside you, and should place the measuring tape snugly, but not tight, around you. The waist measurement should be taken at the end of a normal exhalation.
